Weho Awards & "Wett Party" Weekend

I attended The Weho Awards last Thursday night with Essay and we sat at what was our city's equivalent of... like, the Meryl Streep table at the Golden Globes I suppose, as we were accompanied by Jonathan Chang, Bobby Trendy, Bruce Vilanch and Chi Chi LaRue. How was the show? Well, it was long. In all the worst places: The shameless plugs, the lifetime achievement acceptance speeches and the half-naked women. These three faults were so horrific they were enough to bring down the entire house, which was unfortunate because there was so much to love about the show. LaRue and I agreed on all the highlights: Ben Roman's opening performance of "Again" was incredible (not bad for the waiter of Hamburger Mary's, eh?), as well as a hilarious lesbo emcee whose cadence was so EXACTLY like mine it was uncanny (I always have been kind of Lesbianesse) and a beautifully sung version of the song "Imagine" with heartbreaking accompanying photos that made the two of us jump to our feet for an ovation. Oh and the hunky karate/acrobats/whatever-the-hell-they-were finalists from America's Got Talent -- woof! Yum!

Anthony Cortez and his team should be really proud of themselves. You could tell, for all of the people and acts trying to take advantage of the ceremony and milk it to turn their 15 seconds on the stage into 15 minutes, there was still so much effort and creativity that went into the production.
LaRue and I presented a couple of awards together and then snuck out early as soon as she picked up Best Adult Business. We still had to pack for our early flight to Tucson the next morning so we had to call it an early night!

Tucson was a blast! We came, we saw, we conquered and we partied! But I think what's really important on these trips are the lessons we take home with us. This weekend, for instance, we learned:

- That a breakfast burrito is still Mexican no matter how many times Chi Chi says it isn't.
- To never stay near the airport in Tucson because it's miles and miles and miles away from the center of civilization -- and the long drive downtown is so barren you want to gnaw your arm off or jump from the moving vehicle.
- To never trust a tranny's sense of time. "9 Minutes" says Maaaandi Boo!
- That the bus boys at BJ's are thieves. (My iPhone was stolen.)
- That there are at least 5 members of JasonCurious.com who live in Tucson.
- Why go shopping for your trip before you leave when you can go shopping on your trip with Cheech?
- I'm one helluva stage manager and can turn a go-go dancer to a "go-go host" when there are spots where there is no music/dancing to be had, thanks to my job at Numbers every Wednesday.
- Nash Lawler does an impeccable impression of Nick Manning.
- There are some trips where even Blake Riley doesn't hook up.
- Sister Roma...... is actually...... a man!
- Don't charge people for your house after party. If you turn them away, they might tell cops there are gun shots at your home and before you know it, there will be helicopters flying overhead shining lights in your windows and a line of cop cars outside your driveway. Oooh, party's over!
- The night you don't plan is always the most fun.
- The hottest gay men in Tucson are the bartenders of Woody's.
- Never tell a drag queen her fellow drag queen friend is a train wreck. The friend might be standing right beside you ...out of drag!
- Me saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, Chi Chi LaRue!" is always better than Chi Chi saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, Jason Sechrest!"
- None of us are ready for Nash Lawler.
- No one in Tucson can throw a gay porn party like Mandi Boo at Woody's!

Thanks so much, Tucson! I hope to be back real soon!

Check out the "News Desk" for a link to a full photo gallery from Tucson! (See, this is how I make you read both blogs. ;-) )
