Why Are We There?
This morning, I awakened to an email from one of my readers, Shelby, who had copy and pasted an article on how Iran has decided to make it law that anyone involved in the production of pornography should be put to death. Shelby added to the article: "Reading this may shed some light on why liberals like yourself may be wrong about the President and the war..."
Well, first of all, Shelby, thank you so much for sending this article along.
I had no idea things were so awful in Iran for the pornsters. Though I'm sure it's probably the least of Iran's problems.
You see, Iran is truly a corrupt area of the globe that has posed a legitimate threat to us by developing nuclear technology and refusing to give any information on what it is that they are creating. And despite the fact that we put their leader there, Iran has severely turned on us. Scary, right?
So yes, Shelby, it would make some semblance of sense that we be at war with Iran.
But we're not.
Instead, we're at war with Iraq. The two have nothing to do with each other.
So why are we there? Because Osama "might" have "a few" of his people there? (The words "might" and "a few" are in quotes because that's all we've been able to confirm from Bush or his staff. Those are their words, not mine.) So "might" and "a few" is supposedly our green light for killing tens of thousands of innocent civilians in Iraq? That makes very little sense to me. We invaded Iraq illegally and against the advisement of the United Nations. Why did they tell us not to? Why did even the U.N. consider it illegal?
Because Iraq never did anything to us.
They had nothing to do with 9/11. They had nothing to do with Osama. They had nothing to do with nuclear warfare. Iraq posed no threat to the United States of America.
Now, if you were an innocent Iraqi civilian who had your family killed and were fearful for your own life and the Taliban came to you and said, "We will help you in this war, if you join us," what would you do?
Before the Iraqi war, there were about as many members of the Taliban hiding out in Iraq as there are currently hiding out in the United States. But by invading a place that did nothing to us, we have managed to help the Taliban in recruiting people with hatred against America -- both out of honest anger and out of having no other choice for survival.
Find me a reason why we went into Iraq in the first place, Shelby. Find me a reason why we decided to kill 70,000 innocent civilans. Please. I am begging you. Please find me a reason other than that Iraq has oil and Iran does not. Because I have been searching high and low and would do anything to feel safe in my own country again.
I would love to be wrong about the President and the war. That is what I want the most.
Unfortunately, our government has yet to offer anything substantial to that affect. If I'm missing something that you could shed light on, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Smarty Pants,
It might be nice if you mentioned the 3,000 + Americans that have given up their lives as well. I think they matter as much as any Iraqi citizen.
By the way, if you think Iran is harsh on pornographers just think how hard they are on homosexuals. They aren't too understanding over there believe me. Why does that matter you ask? Well, the fact that mass immigration of muslims and all ideas associated with islam are spreading like wildfire it may end up having a lot to do with you someday.
Who knows, maybe one day our involvement will all make sense, I hope it does, In the meantime I do my best to research the matter and try to think outside the box on such matters.
Whatever, maybe I should just move to WeHo and try my luck as a solf involved, pie-in-the-sky, wannabe thespian, velvet armchair pundit.
Ouch,
I can't believe I wrote all of that. Pretty harsh.

7:48 & 7:52 - It was harsh, but you're entitled -- though I'm not sure what about my post is "self-involved." That's sort of why I strayed from mentioning the 3000+ American soldiers dead in the first place -- it's self-involved and blind to see only our side's plight. And yes, their ideals are spreading like wildfire and as you note, "maybe one day" that will pose a threat to America. But it wasn't when we went there. And it isn't today. And Iraq was not a danger. We went there under the pretense that they had weapons of mass destruction. We found out we were wrong. Still, we stayed there. Then we got Hussein. Still, we stayed there. And now, innocent Iraqi civilians are faced every day with: Have the Americans kill you or join the Taliban for at least some fighting chance of protection. We're hurting our supposed cause with every day we remain in a country that we never should have illegally occupied to begin with. There's no way around this. I know it's sad, I know it's scary and I'm sorry. I cry about it on a daily basis. I want our troops home, I want the innocent Iraqi civilians spared. And the saddest thing is, it's not a tall order either! It's common freaking sense. We made a mistake. We were warned not to do it. Put the tail between the legs and come the fuck home. Perpetuating a wrong will never make it somehow right. xo L, J.
We were lied to, that I won't deny. What I'm hoping for is that maybe someday it will all have had a purpose.
8:34 - Okay... you've got me there. Because I do believe that there is an ultimate reason for everything and that good can come of all bad things. So who knows? Maybe we will grow from this or wake up in a sense. Gotta be a reason for it. Just sucks that so many have to die on both sides. Surely there could've been another way. xo L, J.
I saw the report Jason. The reader Shelby totally missed the point, IMO. Jason, remember 2004?
In 2004 ChiChi LaRue launched the campaign of "protect your porn" simultaneously during the presidential election (I think it was around that time) because the religious conservative freaks were legislating and proposing laws to make a big punch to the porn industry. Although that thing didn't includes all porn stars and people involved in the industry will get death penalty and go to hell, but the basic idea is no different to what Iran is doing.
While Bush is "spreading his democracy" in the magic carpet/oil land while we have religious rights/nuts on this land trying to use all force under the name of morality and God to fight against the so-called moral corruption.
What's the difference? Afghanistan's ex-Taliban government use religious rights to forbid most activities. Iraq is pretty much the same. Malaysia ain't no better on that. Even United Arab Emirates still follows the Islamic laws despite being an open-metropolis. If us back home can't even stop the religious rights eroding the true democracy and force their beliefs aka extremists agenda our daily lives, telling us what to do and what not to do, do you think we have the credibility to "spread democracy" in Islamic World? Because those people are doing the same thing to what those Islamic Governments are doing.
Jimmy - Well, I have to say we're doing the same thing... on a MUCH lesser level. And thank God for that. But the principle is still the same, you're absolutely right. This is really an incredibly astute observation on your part. I hadn't even thought of that. Thanks for enlightening. xo L, J.
