Tube Blog

So much YouTube to share this week, I figured I may as well do it all in one blog...

Good Morning America did a report yesterday on the corruption in recruiting America's youth. Kids armed with hidden cams were told that the war is over, that they are sending troops home and would not likely go to war. One recruiter told a boy he would help him cheat on his drug test. The desperation to send young men and women to be killed made me sick to my stomach.

Coinciding with next week's CD release from Brabra Streisand's last tour, Streisand: Live in Concert, Babs has announced that she will be continuing that tour with a European leg this Summer. She released a video press kit to media outlets seen here.

Okay, I admit it. I'm still watching American Idol. And I hadn't really chosen who I wanted to win until this week when Blake went from being a great performer to being an artist. He's always tried to put his own spin on songs, but never this successfully. This rendition of Bon Jovi's "You Give Love A Bad Name" was the finest I had seen since his first night's performance of that obscure Jamaroquai song. He really is every inch an artist and performer.

The best live performance I've seen from Tori Amos's new album, American Doll Posse, is this solo version of "Beauty of Speed." I was a little disappointed in the live performances of "Big Wheel" (needs a more dynamic arrangement for being played live and it's hard song to sing -- not a lot of breathing room), but this gem of the week makes up for it completely.

Blake was incredible. He took several risks with that very well known song and pulled it off brilliantly. I hope we see a lot more of him.

so sad that kids these days don't bother to watch the news, and get the idea that the war is over. No wait, I thought Bush kept reminding us the war is not yet over? You know, may be we should start to have this "news reading class" in kindergarten or elementary school, training the next generation (can't believe I'm already using that term) to force them to receive the info on what's going on in this world. I'm so glad I always rush to the school library to read newspaper everyday at Grade 5 & 6 and at one point I actually started this trend because everyone in my class was doing the same thing. But theere were few teachers told me stop reading them.

I only watched 1 episode of American Idol, the audition, and boy after 2 hours I was tired already. But the clip of Blake that they played yesterday on Howard, doesn't sound bad at all....

cheers

Albert - I think Blake has really grown as an artist. He had to learn when he first got onto the show that it's not just about beat boxing your way through every song -- that there are some where it works, some where it doesn't. And I think part of the reason this worked so well for audiences this week is that he stopped the beat boxing altogether on the performances leading up to it. It had gotten to a point where I was like, "I just want to hear you SING." ...And he did that! And then went back to form here better than ever. It took a while but he has definitely won my vote. xo L, J.

Jimmy - I dunno. From the time I was six, I was forced to watch not only the nightly news but CNN shows like "Crossfire" on a nightly basis by my step-father. By the time I emancipated myself, I wanted nothing to do with anything political or anything outside of West Hollywood, California for that matter. And now, a portion of my life (and Diary) seems devoted to it. So I'm not sure how much good classes would do. I think the genuine concern and interest has to grow and it just comes with time I suppose. xo L, J.

Jason, may be we don't have to force them to start watching news at that age, but if some parents are feeding them religious value when they're little, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be start feeding what's going on in this world, whether their parents or school wants to censor something they don't like or not.

But the important thing is, they need to start learning using their judgement, and start looking at things from various point of views, not just have your fat ass sitting in front of TV and just receiving informations, and that's it. May be one doesn't have to watch the news, but the minimum would certainly have to think, instead of just receiving information. And what you put down in the "newsdesk" has been successful on stiring people's judgement and arguement, particularly on Brent Corrigan and Ashton Ryan case.

In my Grade 10's social studies, our teacher had this project and I love it - current events. We had to bring a current events to class and we have to present them. But what I don't like was, you read them, people receive information, and that's it. There were no discussions and that was the main problem. You can't simply just sit there and receive your information, and tell yourself "ok, I know". and what do you actually really know? In Grade 11/12 English, as much as I always get C or C- due to writing, but I like the class because we had discussions on current events and pretty much forgot the novels we had to read. There was this Taiwanese girl, who admit she doesn't pay attention to current events, asked naive question on Bush and Iraq thing. My own reaction was already like, boy, your world doesn't evolve on your school work only.
