Song of the Week: "Princes Familiar"

So maybe we subconsciously seek out those who remind us of our parents (or step-parents) in relationships. What we see is what we know, right? I think our parents are the first thing we know of love and how they choose to show their love for us defines how we approach love in partnerships later in life. Subliminaly women and gay men look for their fathers while straight men and gay women seek out their mothers. This is not always the case, of course, but it seems most common.

There's a line in Alanis Morissette's song "Princes Familiar" that says: "Papa, cry for your princess so that she will find gentle princes familiar."

When my father cried for me last Summer, I think in that moment I was changed insurmountably. I spent more time with a mentally abusive step-father growing up than I did with my real father. My dad and I have had our own issues but regardless of our differences, he is gentle, selfless, funny, creative, attentive and loving. Since becoming closer with him in the past year, I think I strive more to be like him than ever before and to look for those same qualities in the people I choose to let in.

No, I insist on them actually.

Hence the reason my life and the people in it have changed so drastically.
